2015年IWC日本酒審査に参加して参りました！

毎年ロンドンで開かれる、世界最大規模のワインコンテストInternational Wine Challenge（IWC）。

9年前から日本酒部門が設立され、私（山本）も中国代表として審査員を務めさせていただいており、今年で3回目。

今年は877種類もの日本酒が出品され、過去最大。今回は日本以外の国で造られたお酒も参加するとか。ただ、全てブラインドテイスティングで、銘柄は隠されているので、どの酒が海外産なのかは全然分かりません…


 

今年も、去年同様ロンドンのクリケット場”THE OVAL”で開催。日本酒は877種類で、審査員も44人でしたが、ワインは1万点を超える銘柄が集まり、100人を超えるジャッジ（審査員）がテイスティングをするので、大きな場所が必要なんです。

日本酒の審査は3日間。初日は「メダル級か、そうでないか」を振り分け、2日目は「メダルの色を決める」作業を行います。初日は約100種類の日本酒をテイスティング。本醸造、純米酒、純米大吟醸など各種日本酒を利いていきます。審査員は日本人、欧米人が混合の5人で1グループになり、リーダー（パネルジャッジ）の指導の元、みんなの意見がまとめられていきます。一人だけ変なコメントすると（利き酒能力が）ばれるので大変。なかなか疲れました…

2日目は細かく味を検証して、最終的にメダルを受賞したお酒には、コメントも出さなければなりません。ワインの世界で活躍する日本人、欧米人のみなさんは、味や香りの評価も非常に厳しく、自分も勉強になりました。もちろん日本酒の利き酒名人の方や、鑑定官の先生のコメントからは、非常に勉強になるものがありました。日本でも100種類を超える日本酒を利いて、意見交換をするという機会はなかなかないようです。

さらに3日目には、パネルジャッジのみなさんが集まって、ゴールドメダル受賞銘柄の中で最終順位を付けていきます。この作業に参加するのは本当のエキスパートだけ。自分はまだまだ修業が足りません…
